Mar Vista Addition
Addition to Gregory Ain's Mar Vista Tract Project
2014 | Rick Gooding Studio
As a house addition to one of the 52 houses designed for a communal development by Modernist architect Gregory Ain, this project is heavily inspired by the original conceptual intent for adaptability and flexibility, designed to be able to accommodate a family of any size through the use of sliding and folding wood panels as divisions between spaces. Taking on a similar approach, this house addition instead proposes the use of a pivoting wall system that allows the house to adapt depending on the occupant’s use. Programmatically, the addition is designed as a temporary artist’s residence, accommodating their need for an exhibition space, a design studio, private living space, kitchen, and an isolated lap pool.
