PHYSICAL CONNECTION | KNOWLEDGE DISPERSION

Given the brief of designing a Biomedical Center at the site between the edge of the Barcelona Zoo and the Ring Road, this project employs the idea of scatter pavilions along a promenade rather than a singular building with all the programs inside it, designed to maximize communication and interaction between the visitors and the researchers as circulation is driven through the project.

The process began by looking at the site assuming a complete lack of interference. Looking at the top ten points around the site according to Google Maps, each point is given a score in three different scales,  inputted into a Grasshopper script then overlayed to generate a visualization of the site as if no roads, streets, or barriers existed.

Based on the field map generated through Grasshopper, a warped grid is formed through the implied flow, which informed program, structural grid overhead, and also objects such as skylights and benches. Two levels of public promenade is created, with two additional zones of public space that could be used for further development into a green park and an outdoor exhibition space shared with the new proposed museum where the train station currently is located on.

WE RANKED THE 10 LOCATIONS FROM (1-10) SEPARATELY BASED ON GOOGLE REVIEWS, YELP REVIEWS, TRIP ADVISOR REVIEWS AND OUR OWN EXPERIENCE/INTUITION. THIS RESULTED IN FOUR DIFFERENT READINGS THAT WERE COMBINED TO RESULT IN THE FINAL RANKING. 1 IS THE LEAST "ATTRACTIVE", AND 10 IS THE MOST "ATTRACTIVE"

WE IDENTIFIED THREE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES WITHIN OUR ATTRACTOR POINTS. PUBLIC PARKS (8), TRANSIT (5), AND BUILDINGS (2).

HAVING THREE DIFFERENT "STEPS" WITHIN THE DATA, WE ASSIGNED (8) TO THE MOST "ATTRACTIVE" CATEGORY (PUBLIC PARKS), (5) TO THE SECOND MOST "ATTRACTIVE" CATEGORY (TRANSIT), AND (2) TO THE LEAST "ATTRACTIVE" CATEGORY (BUILDINGS). THE RATIONALE BEHIND THIS IS BASED ON THE RANKING OF THE ATTRACTOR POINTS IN THE RANKED VISUALIZATION; PUBLIC PARKS APPEAR HIGHEST ON THE LIST, FOLLOWED BY TRANSIT STATIONS AND THEN BY BUILDINGS.

IN GENERAL, L-SIZE PROGRAMS ARE ON THE LOWER LEVEL, TUCKED UNDER THE PUBLIC PROMENADE, AND  M-SIZE PROGRAMS AND S-SIZE OBJECTS ARE ON THE UPPER LEVEL, SCATTERED AS PAVILIONS TO MAXIMIZE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR INTERACTIONS BETWEEN VISITORS AND RESEARCHERS.

 

COMBINATIONS OF DIFFERENT WORKING SPACES, EACH WITH A UNIQUE SHAPE AND CONNECTION, ARE INTENDED TO FURTHER STIMULATE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DIFFERENT PROGRAMS INTRAMURALLY WITHIN THE RESEARCH CENTERS.
